Baratang. Limestone caves, mud volcanoes and a mangrove creek.
Baratang Island, about 100 km north of Port Blair, packs three of the Andamans' strangest natural wonders into one day: ancient limestone caves reached by a mangrove creek boat ride, bubbling mud volcanoes, and dense tropical forest along the way.
The route
The trip starts before sunrise from Port Blair, driving through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve (strictly no stopping or photography) to the Middle Strait jetty, then a short vehicle ferry to Baratang. From there, a shared fibre boat winds through a stunning mangrove creek to the limestone caves trail.
Limestone caves
A 10-minute walk through forest brings you to caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. The formations are still growing — your guide will point out the most striking chambers.
Mud volcanoes
A short drive from the jetty, Baratang's mud volcanoes bubble and gurgle as natural gas pushes wet clay to the surface — one of the few places in India you can see this phenomenon.
Practical notes
This is a long day with early departure (typically 3–4 AM starts to catch the convoy timings through the reserve). We provide the vehicle, boat tickets and permits end-to-end. Carry water, snacks and comfortable walking shoes.
